How to get the most out of your Notebook battery

Squeeze the most mileage out of your notebook’s portable power source without harming your computeror yourself

All hail the lithium-ion battery, that wonderful device that keeps your notebook running when you’re away from the docking station, or when someone accidentally knocks your power cord out of the wall. Where would you be without one?

Virtually tied to your desk, for one thing. Much less efficient at your job, for another. So, it’s time to give your battery a little bit of respect for all the work it quietly allows you to do.

There are, of course, a number of things to keep in mind about that wonderful stick-shaped block of metal under your keyboard. It’s not eternal, and like everything, needs a bit of care. But treat it well, and the two of you will get along for years. Here are some ways to keep your notebook’s battery (and yourself) running at peak efficiency:

Use me, baby

Figure 1: The more often a PC battery is recharged,
the less-effective that charge (and the battery) becomes.

It’s no secret that a battery’s charge doesn’t last foreverthe typical unit, when new, may run for two or three hours (probably less); an “extended life” battery might go for up to eightmeaning you need to be careful with how you use your operating minutes. On top of that, a battery’s capacity to hold a charge declines over time, typically dropping to about 80 percent of normal after 12 to 18 months of service (see Figure 1). But you won’t even get that kind of mileage if you’re always hooked up to a charger. At least once a week, work off battery power for as long as possible (burn off at least 20 percent of the total capacity in any event).

Learn how to calibrate your battery and manage battery power more-effectively in Windows**.

Charge me up

If your battery is new, keep it plugged in for at least 12 hours before use. You’ll want to cycle the battery (drain it completely, then fully recharge) three times before you can be a little more flexible with its usage. The cycling is also recommended if you have stored the battery for a few months. Keep note of how often you have to charge your battery; if the battery does not have a charge after 12 hours of charging, or if you find yourself recharging the unit several times a day, it should be replaced.

I need my maintenance

Regular upkeep of your notebook will keep it rolling along with minimum strain on its battery. At least once per week, defragment your hard drive, (however, don’t do this when you’re only on battery power). Also, keep the machine clean. Use a can of compressed air to clean the notebook’s fans and vents at least once a week, and clean the battery’s metal contacts every month or so with a rubbing alcohol-moistened cloth.

Keep me breathing

Consistent airflow is a necessity to keep the notebook from running hot. Avoid merely placing the unit in your lap when you work, or setting it down on a blanket or pillow “for a few minutes” when you tend to something else. Try to keep the notebook elevated and well-ventilated while working, such as with a cooling stand or portable/laptop desk.

Here’s how to clean your computer properly and keep everything flowing as it should.

Don’t cook me or freeze me

Extreme temperaturestoo hot or too coldcan have a major impact on how fast your battery drains. When storing the notebook, don’t keep it in a hot car interior or in direct sunlight, or leave it in the vehicle during extremely cold weather. If you do the latter, remove the battery and let it warm up to room temperature first (this may take several hours) to avoid internal notebook damage from rapid condensation. The same goes for spare batteries, which can be wrapped in plastic and stored in the refrigerator (drain battery to 50 percent power first) to prolong their lifespan. The preferred temperature for lithium-ion batteries is 60 degrees to 75 degrees Fahrenheit.

Give me less to work on

Turn off any unused applications and avoid several power-eating habits, such as multitasking, unnecessary use of the CD/DVD player and internal speakers, and downloading or installing major applications while living off the battery (this will also speed up your notebook’s performance). Also, dim the screen a bit, by 10 percent to 25 percent, to give you a few more minutes of power.

Here’s a list of PC power management settings, by operating system.

Check my settings

Your notebook’s Power Options setting gives you the option of using a pre-selected Maximum Battery Life setting that self-adjusts items such as display lighting, hibernation and sleep modes (see Figure 2). If you have the option, select Hibernate instead of Standby. Standby mode saves some power and allows you to instantly resume where you left off, but the hibernate function saves more energy because it stores your PC’s current state before completely shutting itself down.

Here’s how to set your notebook’s power settings in Windows XP*, Vista* or on the Mac OS X* operating systems.

Don’t play doctor with me

It should be obvious, but every so often someone feels the need to crack open a battery just to “see what’s inside.” Don’t. Lithium-ion batteries contain safety mechanisms that can ignite or explode if damaged. Also avoid crushing or puncturing the battery, or disposing of the battery in fire or water.

Replace me with one of my peers

When the time comes to finally put a new battery in your notebook, only use the recommended model(s) for your machine. This information can be found at www.hp.com** for ThinkPads or at Lenovo’s site at http://www-307.ibm.com**.

My New Grocery Store

I wanted to let you know about an online grocery store that Teri and I have joined. We have saved a lot of our grocery money by purchasing our groceries on line. The best part is the shipping is free and we have saved from 25% on most things to 75% on peanut butter comparing prices with Winco foods and Costco. Kandra Conary, our daughter in South Carolina, is saving even more than us because she gets the savings plus she gets all her orders tax free. This saves her about 11% on top of the regular savings. Those of you that do not live in Oregon will save on sales tax because it is considered mail order. The orders are shipped by Federal Express and take about a week to receive your order. The savings are worth the monthly fee. We feel it is a great way to save money and earn extra money if you choose to. (Teri also likes it because she can get her groceries in her pajamas at midnight).

We have already ordered our groceries in January and February and have seen the high quality of the products. If you were to look in our kitchen cabinets you would not be able to tell the difference between what we have ordered from My Harvest America, Winco or Costco.

If you want more information please go to our website WWW.Myharvestamerica.com/dtlloyd and look around. When you go to our website go to the red tab “National Grocery Store”. It has a video of the grocery store. It will not show many prices because it has the same membership policy as Costco.

OK Teri and I are not doing to well with writing blogs. This will be a blast of a couple thing we have been doing to get people caught up with what we are doing. We have been really busy I work full time job Intel and in school full time also. I also doing a second job to keep things interesting.
I have been doing a little programming with Java in my last class it was fun once you get a program working the pain was getting to that step were the program actually works. We been busy with our little grandchild that is living with us She is a hand full. We all take turns when she has her moments of fussiness and it help but I'm out of the picture a lot but I do love to rock her to sleep. Teri has never had a computer she could call her own and so I sold my Apple MacBook Pro and picked up a Netbook for her and a regular PC for me for classes. I think see is enjoying it because it is so small and portable it will be nice for her to enjoy.

More Virus problems on computers

I was at work and found this information and wanted to let all my family and friends know the information so they can keep their computer safe.

Rogue Anti-Virus Software: A PC threat both at work and at home

Hackers are disguising malware in the form of anti virus tools and the products look real but they're not. Here's what you need to know to not be fooled.
Have you heard any of these names:
· Antivirus 2009
· Antivirus 2008
· XP Antivirus
· XP Antivirus 2008
· XP Antivirus 2009
· Antivirus XP Pro 2009
If you have, these are not real anti virus programs, but are all part of the same family of malware that performs devious tactics when run or executed to get you to purchase rogue anti-spyware programs and/or to turn your PC into a zombie.
What is a Rogue Anti-Virus Program?
Antivirus XP Pro 2009, along with a growing list of similarly named malware, is a type of rogue anti-virus program. Rogue anti-virus programs are fake programs that are designed to disguise and behave just like a legitimate virus removal application. Rogue anti-virus programs are usually created by hackers who attempt to take your money and/or take over your PC through devious tactics. Rogue anti-virus programs use pop-ups, fake scans and alert messages to convince you that your system has been infected. Rogue anti-virus may scan your system displaying erroneous results of viruses present on your computer. They may also cause damage to your computer, disable features designed to enable you to restore the PC to a prior state, turn your PC into a zombie PC that is part of a botnet, and can be very difficult to remove.
Not only are the creators of these rogue anti-virus programs intent on stealing your money, but they are equally intent on compromising your privacy, stealing your identity, capturing your passwords (through installed key loggers), stealing company IP, and making your home or work PC part of their botnet to spam and scam others.
Does this sound pretty scary?
Well it should! On December 2, 2008 the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland issued a temporary restraining order against Innovative Marketing, Inc. and Byte Hosting Internet Services, LLC after receiving a request from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). According to the FTC, the combined malware including XP Antivirus has fooled over one million people into purchasing the software marketed as security products. The court also froze the assets of the companies in an effort to provide some monetary reimbursement to affected victims. The FTC established claims that the companies established an elaborate ruse that duped Internet advertising networks and popular Web sites into carrying their advertisements.
Antivirus XP Pro 2009 and it's similarly named variants, is a series of rogue antispyware applications that were created with the intent of sabotaging your computer. Antivirus XP Pro 2009 is a clone of the infamous Antivirus 2008. By the way, the author of this article has personal experience with XP Antivirus 2008 - after a week of evenings spent using $80 of removal tools guaranteed to remove the infection, I resorted to rebuilding my home PC.
Generally, Antivirus XP Pro 2009 comes up after you installed a video codec (encoding and decoding of video files) that comes with some form of malware, usually a Trojan, or virus. Antivirus XP Pro 2009 normally generates fake and misleading system popup error messages so end-users will be tricked into purchasing Antivirus XP Pro 2009. See the screen shot below for some of the fake infection alert screens used also note that the sources of the rogue anti-virus programs have been regularly updating the interface to better fool their potential victims:
An important point can be made here be familiar with the anti-virus software that you have installed and are using on your PC (both at work and at home). In particular, be familiar with the update screens and the control center. This familiarity will help you recognize a rogue anti-virus program screen for the fake that it is. If it doesn't look exactly like your currently anti-virus software, avoid it all together the safest way to close a fake is by shutting it down through your Task Manager. Oftentimes, closing the pop-up using the cancel or box in the upper right corner of the screen has the same end result as clicking OK or Install.
How to prevent being scammed on your home PC
Protect your computer from rogue anti-virus programs and scams by following these four easy prevention rules.
· Keep your Windows Security up-to-dateMicrosoft provides updates weekly and can always be downloaded manually from the Microsoft website. Tip: Regularly visit Windows Update and set your computer to receive security & critical updates automatically. To get Microsoft Update, go to IE > Tools > Windows Update > Product Updates, and select "ALL High-Priority Security Updates" from the list. Then open IE and go to Internet Options > Security > Internet, then press "Default Level", then OK. Now press "Custom Level."
· Download and install a reliable version of anti-virus/anti-spyware softwareA good anti-virus/anti-spyware program that recognizes current Antivirus XP Pro 2009 spyware as well as other forms of spyware, can significantly help prevent installation of rogue anti-spyware programs
· Install and keep your firewall turned onA firewall is essential for a comprehensive protection of your PC. Make sure that your firewall is always turned on. A firewall can prevent unwanted software like Antivirus XP Pro 2009 from infecting your computer. A firewall is typically included in the cable or DSL connection device provided by your ISP.
· Keep your anti-spyware definitions up-to-dateSince new Antivirus XP Pro 2009 files can be created every day, it is important to keep your anti-spyware program up-to-date. Your anti-spyware scanner should have an update feature that provides new spyware definitions instantly with a click of a button. Often, legitimate anti-spyware software will open an update window reminding you that there are new updates available. In both cases, either at work and at home, make sure you are using appropriate backup tools at work this would be CNB. Should you have to rebuild either you work or home system, make sure all your critical files are backed up prior to rebuilding the system.

Nice Weekend

We enjoyed a walk around the neighborhood. Daisy (our Miniature Schnauzer) needed to get out and do a little walking. It was good for both Daisy and the family. We have had a couple of good weeks with sun and just little rain to make everything nice a green. We been mowing the lawn every week and it is nice but Daisy after being out side comes in each time with green feet after each mowing.

The Doctor Visit

My thoughts from my last doctor visit.  I’m 45 and going to turn 46 this year.  I’ve had a concern that I should get my health checked because of the different cancer-causing chemical I was exposed to when I was working in a machine shop.  I went in and explained all the problems (which was different for me because I normally just hold everything in) and one by one he said cut them all down.  We went over a lot of facts and it was great information.  I have always had concerns about my high cholesterol because of my Mom and Dad health so I was not sure if I could work on it. But the doctor felt that we should be able to get everything under control.  We will see I have to loss 15 lbs before end of summer.  The challenge is on… because I’m going to do it.
